Sound Production Journal

Today, I was finishing off my action plan this didn't not take long to do because all I had to do was add some more information. When I finish I filled out a self evaluation about my proposal and action plan. When I looked over my proposal, I had describe and explain how I was going to do it for example I explain what type of Foley I was going to use and how I was going to create it but I haven't justified why so to get a distinction I would have to go back to my proposal a take about 'why' I am going to do this. In my action I did the same as my proposal I describe and explain but I have justified why. On my action plan I was suppose to record some Foley for my clip Life on Mars. This didn't go to plan because I was doing other work so this mean on Tuesday I will have to catch up and get all my recording done by then.

Task 8:Proposal sarah

Task 8: Proposal

First Clip: Life on Mars

Client
The first film/TV is that I am going to use for my soundtrack production is Life of Mars.  My client is Bharat Nalluri. Bharat Nalluri is a British television director, he has directed films like Torchwood: Miracle Day, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, The Crow: Salvation and Downtime.

Target Audience
The BBC stated that Life on Mars was targeted at an adult audience. Looking at the graph (source: Imbd) BBC targeted at the right audience because most of the viewers over 18 watched this program more. It seem that people aged 30 – 44 enjoyed this program because 6811 rated and watched this. This TV show is aimed at both males and females but according to this graph, more males watched this than females. The content of the TV shows that this aimed at a British audience and also because it was aired on BBC which is watch by British viewers. Also because this TV series is set in a Britain and it uses British slang that international viewer might not understand.  Life on Mars is about a man called Sam Tyler who gets struck by a car and wakes up in the 1973. The genre of this TV series is Crime Drama so this will appeal to the fans of this genre.

Sound FX
For this task I would be using Foley for example recording traffic, opening and closing doors for the shot where Sam close his car door, banging on the wall to create the sound where Sam bangs he car door. I will be recording this on a dynamic microphone and will be recording most of the sound outside because the scene was set out sound so it will have a better and more realistic ambient noise like the wind and the rain rather than recording indoors which doesn't have that effect. I will also be creating sounds on garageband that I could not record outside for example when he get hit by the car. I don't know what instruments I am going to be using but I am going to be using trail and error to find the the right sound. I am also going to be downloading sound like the window rolling and the seatbelt noise because I can't think of anyways of creating these sound. These sound will be from YouTube and there could be some copyright issues (The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, is the current UK copyright law. It gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control the ways in which their material may be used. The rights cover: Broadcast and public performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting and lending copies to the public. In many cases, the creator will also have the right to be identified as the author and to object to distortions of his work) to prevent this from happening you could asked the owner of the sound if they can use the sound or give credit to the artist. (source: http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/uk_law_summary

Music information

I will be downloading 'Life on Mars - David Bowie' to use in my clip as a diegetic sound because this is audio was shown in the scene playing on his iPhone so it makes sense to put this audio in my clip. This also may cause copyright issues as I willing creates a quite a depressing and upsetting mood which fits well with the clip because the character seems the same. In a professional situation, if I was going to put an artist music track in my video I would have obtain a recording license from the rights holder in the recording which would be either the artist or the producer or the record company, you would probably be asked to pay a royalties fee. (Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/filmmaking/guide/before-you-start/music-rights#original ). At the beginning of the track it is suppose to make the viewers feel or understand that the character in the feel quite mournful or depressed.

Harry Brown - Torture

Client
The director for this film is Daniel Barber, he is directed films like The Tonto Woman and Substitution.  The film is about an elderly ex-serviceman and widower looks to avenge his best friend's murder by doling out his own form of justice. The genre of this film action/crime/drama.

Target Audience
Harry Brown is rated 18 by the BBFC "contains very strong language, strong violence, hard drug use and sex" this means that it is aimed at a young adult audience.  Even though this film is rated 18, I do think that people under the age of 18 would be attracted to watch this type of film. This film would also be more appealing to the male audience as more males like to watch more violent and masculine films. Also the main characters in this film are males, so this could relate to the male audience. According to imbd (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289406/ratings?ref_=tt_ov_rt#reports)50813 males and 4742 females watched this movie which supports what I previously said about males being the main target. According to this graph less female watched this program. This film would probably most likely be aimed at c1 people because of the setting and the theme of the movie would probably attract these types of audience. This film would mainly be targeted at UK residents because of the some language they used in this film.

Sound Effect FX
I will be using Foley in my production work. The first sound we hear is the light switching on, I could record me switching the lights off or on in the class room or even dropping a coin on to the pavement because I think that could reproduce the sound in the film. The next sound are the main character (Harry Brown) picking up the wire and walking towards the guy tired up. I reproduce these sounds by recording my footsteps on concrete because the character in the film is walking on concrete and also plastic bags to make the sound of his clothes and also him taking the plastic bag off his head. I will be downloading a whipping sound because I don't think I could reproduce that sound.

Music Effect
Even though is no diegetic or non diegetic sound in clip, I could use garageband to create a non-diegetic sound that could build up more of the tension and atmosphere in this scene.

Spoken Words Information
I will be getting two males from my class to record the speaking bits in  the recording studio and then I will sync them up with the clip. The dialogue shows who is in power in this scene because the guy tied up is crying and sound terrified and the sounds in control so their are two different contrast of moods in the room. I will be using a dymantic mic to go outside and record with. Condenser mic to record in the radio studio.

Task 1: Matt Social Documentary

Social Action/Interview Techniques – Task 1

I had selected a few issues and things that were happening in my community. I could find a lot of things happening in my area so I decided to expanding to places where visit a lot. My first idea is based around a topic from an article from the Streatham Guardian saying 'Drug dealers from Nine Elms and Streatham who shipped class A drugs from London to Kent by rail have been jailed. Kish Redmond, 25, of Heath Road, Nine Elms, and Benjamin Harvey-James, 19, of Besley Street, Streatham were sentenced on December 3 at Blackfriars Crown Court’. With this topic I would have talked about how young these drug dealers, are people turning to drug dealing because of lack of employment, why is drug dealing effecting working class areas?, who is this affecting?, the effects of these drugs? And what can we do about this problem? I could have interviewed parents in the area, young people on their opinions on drugs and selling drugs, police, NHS and the MPs. My next idea was stray dogs in my area. There has been a rise in stray dogs around my area that have been lurking around people’s bins and messing up the area. I could talk about why these dogs are on the streets and should you have a license to buy a dog? I could interview shop keepers and neighbours that have been affected and also interview Battersea shelter on ways of preventing this happening. My last idea was the Westfield shopping centre has been agreed to be built in Croydon. There are a lot of benefits to Westfield being built in Croydon like more income for the area, more employment and new homes. But this could also affect people’s jobs for example while Westfield’s is being built a lot of people is going to unemployment. Is this a good place to build Westfield because of previous events like the riots and also a lot of businesses are going to get closed down? Already business men like Marco Cash who last Saturday opened up a low-cost goods store in a disused department store refused to sell.

I have chosen to do the Stray dog idea as I think I could gain a lot of information to form a good documentary compared to my other two ideas, it is also quite unusual topic to talk about because we don't really hear about stray dogs in this country. The westfield topic isn't really much I could try to change because a social action documentary is subject that I am trying to change and Westfield is going to be built in Croydon regardless of what I say or the community say about this. The drug idea I don’t think I could get a lot of people’s honest opinions on this topic.

Potentially the running order of my documentary could start off with a background of Westfield showing some footage of the opening of the first store (Westfield White City). Next we could interview people in Croydon Town centre. I am going to avoid using presenting because I think it could either go two ways the presenter could be very confident or it could sound very nervous and could ruin the whole documentary. Then have a background of Croydon, talk about the riots hitting croydon.

Social Action: Kony 2012

What is social issues being focused in this documentary?
The social issue in this documentary is that the leader of the Ugandan resistant army was abducted children to become sex slaves or child soldiers.According to this documentary Kony has amassed over 30,000 child soldiers in Northern Uganda .

Summaries what happens in the beginning/middle/end of this
The beginning of documentary was about the filmmaker's personal life. The first clip we see is of the filmmaker's wife giving birth to their son. Then he starts to talk about his career and his achievement as a filmmaker. After to tells us about his trip to Africa which leads to Jacob's story which leads us to the middle of the documentary. The middle of the documentary talks about how Jacob's brother was killed and all the abductions he has seen. The ending of this documentary tells us how we can get involved and spread Kony's name.
What type of documentary is this ? conventions used?
This is a current affairs documentary. It was talking about a issue that was recently going on in the world. Some conventions that this documentary has to make me think that this a current affairs documentary is that it is telling you about a problem currently going and ways on how we can change it, this documentary includes footage and telling us news on the situation.

What techniques are used to main the audiences attention?
The director used emotional stories e.g Jacob's story, mutilations of people's face to maintain people's attentions because people want to know what happens next? and maybe what they can do about this matter. Also the editing was very stylize so it was very interesting to watch.

What was the purpose of this documentary? what change is it campaigning for?
The purpose of this documentary was to get Kony known everywhere by getting celebrities and government leaders to do to something. To do this he wanted to people to use social media or buy merchandises so we could make Kony 'famous'. They were campaigning for Kony to be arrested and for all the children to be reunited with their families.

Who is the target audience?
The main target audience for this documentary is western countries. I know this because he mentions countries like the UK and America to help out Ugandan which is quite a poor country, and he also post this documentary on YouTube which can be viewed by every country so he is trying to reach to a wider audience.

How have they been targeted?
They used social media like Twitter and Facebook to spread their message because over the recent years these social network has become a quick way for people to find out about organisation like this.

How is the audience encouraged to participate in creating change?
Encouraging people to spread Kony's name by getting celebrities to spread the message so that people in the government could hear about it and make a change. Also buying merchandise and donating money to the cause.

Tim: Factual TV Analysis: need to do

Factual Television Analysis

A)  Television
Laptop
Smartphones.

B)  TV would have the best sound quality and the mobile would have the worst quality of sound. The TV is the best device for a surround sound system and sounds the most realists if sound system was placed around the room. The phone would have the worst place for a surround system because phones are not made to produce good quality sounds.

C)  Poor quality of sound could affect the audience mood dramatically because the audience would become annoyed and might stop watching the program  which means you, could lose viewers or your target audience. They might become uninterested in the directors work and could be put off watching any other moving image production that director makes. The audience wouldn't be able to follow the narrative properly.

D)

  •      Studio audio recording – Alan Carr: Chatty Men is a comedy chat show where the presenter Alan Carr interviews Celebrity and find out more information about them and what they are doing while making it funny. This Alan Carr: Chatty Man episode is broadcast on Channel 4 on Friday 11 October 2013. The only non diegetic music I heard on Chatty Man was the theme song at the beginning. The music was very upbeat and makes the audience feel quite cheery which suggest that the theme tune is a reflections of the TV program they are about to watch. The audio that comes from program is dialogue between Alan Carr and the celebrities and also the reactions for the live audience. Sometimes their will be some diegetic sound effect which the team background have played.
  •       Location audio recording - Coach Trip is about 14 tourist travelling around Europe on a coach. This program is shown on channel 4 on Wed 1 February 2012 at 5:30. This program use a diegetic and uses lavaliere microphone so that they can hear the tour and the tourist voices much clearer and also so their voices doesn't get drown out by the weather. They also use some non diegetic music sometimes to represent what country they are going to e.g playing spanish music. They also use non diegetic music to fit the tourist personalities.
  •       Interview -  Ashanti Interview at Breakfast Club 105.1. This was shown on YouTube on the 4th March 2014. The beginning of this interview had diegetic theme tune that was played by one of the interviewers to introduce the show. The interviewers and the interviewee seemed to be using a condenser studio microphone so that you could hear the people that are talking clearer and so that the viewer who are listening to this radio station can hear every single word that the interviewers and the interviewees are talking about.
  •      Voiceover - Come dine with me. This was shown on Channel 4 on the 13th September 2011 at 9pm. The voiceover in this show introduces the show and also commentate on what the contestant on the show are doing and the food they are making. The voiceover uses light - heart banter to connect with the audience at home and to also make the show a bit more entertaining rather than watching a boring cooking show.
  •      A moving sound audio - Licence to Kill. Licence to kill is a one of TV documentary about young drives. This was aired on BBC Three on the 1st May 2013. There is a scene where the presenter is talking to the person recording as she is driving and the sound seemed to be coming from the camera and she might have a lavalier microphone because even though you could hear the background noise you could hear the presenter clearly.

Matt- Task 2: Reviews & Information: Improvements needed

Final Version. 10 January 2014. The Lift

Reviews from http://film.thedigitalfix.com/
Lift, 2001
The brilliance and uniqueness of Isaac’s technique is demonstrated in his first short film, where he simply stands waiting in the lift of a tower block, pointing his camera at the diverse inhabitants who use it, occasionally striking up a conversation with a pertinent question or observation on their thoughts, on their love life, on their dreams as he gets to know the various people he meets.

One might expect some hostility on the part of his subjects towards having a camera thrust in their face by a stranger, particularly within such a confined space, but somehow, whether through persistence or just the nature of the Londoners to take everything in their stride (it's actually filmed in Margate, but most seem to work and socialise in London), the people – barring one or two people clearly in a drunken state – are generally open to sharing fairly intimate details of their lives. Even those who are initially wary and mildly aggressive eventually come around and perhaps inadvertently reveal more about themselves than they would normally wish to.

This is a more surprising revelation than it seems, considering how in general people tend to keep to themselves in lifts, all the more so considering the clear racial and age differences of the people involved in this particular tower block. Yet, even within the span of the few seconds it takes to get to and from the ground-floor, Isaacs manages to get his subjects to open up to the camera with disarming ease. The message is simple, but brilliantly achieved, that there are depths to the people around us that we might never be aware of, which we could discover if we’d only take the time to ask.

Analysis: This review is very positive, the writer talks explains about how Marc Isaac achieved this films and also the things he liked about the film. There wasn't any bad or negative comments about this short film. The writer says 'The message is simple but brilliantly achieved' which means that he enjoyed this short film

The Lift Review: James Hocking http://gorillafilmmagazine.com/2011/08/07/lift/

Cold mechanical steel, met by a dull blanket of grey concrete. An unexpected setting for the profound emotional insight and raw humanity that Marc Isaacs exposes in Lift. Marc Isaacs is a North London-born documentary filmmaker with a passion and flare for bringing those on the fringes of our society to centre stage. His documentary films to date include Lift, All White in Barking, Travellers, and the harrowing Calais: The Last Border. His films force the viewer to look without judging eyes at people who remain on the lower rungs of our communities. Those ghosts in the background who work the unskilled jobs, speak with simple tongues and return home alone at night.
These common characteristics of his work are perhaps best displayed in Lift, possibly due to the sheer simplicity of the idea and the confinement of its subjects, but also because of the distinct sense of pathos we get from the wry smiles and faintly sardonic remarks made by them. Isaacs spent two months in the elevator of an East London tower block, speaking to the residents as they went on their daily commute. London’s multicultural nature ensures Isaacs encounters a diverse range of people, different colours, creeds and ages. The superficial yet clear divide in many of the tower’s residents is something which undoubtedly contributes to conveying the film’s message.
What is particularly interesting is the confidence that builds between Isaacs and the characters. A confidence that grows simply from being present in such a familiar and confined space, often without any real engagement at all. At first some are reserved, a few are somewhat overconfident in the gaze of the lens (alcohol having a role in these cases) and there are others completely unwilling to cooperate. However, as the films progresses all seem to grow used to his presence in the elevator, he becomes part of their daily ritual.
Once a bond of trust is built between Isaacs and his subjects, he poses a simple question. This proves to be a cuttingly effective technique in bringing out that which lies deepest within the characters. Questions such as ‘what is your best childhood memory?’ retrieve some of the most fascinating answers from lives which seem steeped in mundanity. But it is the development of the characters that these questions are posed to which truly captivates the viewer. A striking example in particular, is a man who at first appears to be completely unremarkable and too anxious to hold any relevant discourse with Isaacs. Even this man’s fondest childhood memory is ‘winning a recorder competition as the only boy’. But the story this man goes on to reveal to us is truly shocking, one that highlights Isaacs talent at bonding with his subjects purely by becoming involved in the most simple aspects of their lives, both through his physical presence and questioning.
Lift takes place in a world where a morbid, futureless, artificial light illuminates the lost souls of dirty hallways. But beneath this grim aesthetic lies an undeniably true concept. It beckons us to consider one of the truly sad things in life, that there are people everywhere, who are alone.

Overall: This film was made for a film festival audience,  on IMDb 'The Lift' shows that on an average more males watched The Lift more than females which I don't think the director did this on purpose because the documentary hasn't got any convention that I think would aim at one director. This graph shows people ages from 18+ which I am not surprised by because I didn't think that this documentary would appeal to people under the ages of 18. This graph also shows that there was a lot of more non- US views who had watch this. I don't think this documentary was made for a large scale of people but niche audience that like usual sort of documentaries e.g film festivals.
